Forming Your Tribe

A Business Owner Is Only As Good As The People Around Her

With so many benefits to being your own boss, it’s hard to find a reason not to start your own beauty business. But for many people, being an entrepreneur can be lonely at times. It’s tough finding people you vibe with when you’re out there on your own, but doing so is a critical element to running a successful business. So how can you build an inner circle of support that you can trust? Here are the six people that no entrepreneur should be without.

Your “Co-Workers”

Just because you’re running your own show doesn’t mean you have to give up creating a culture where you can thrive. Finding a home within a group of salon suites is the perfect place for an entrepreneur to get started. You get the ecosystem of other stylists to work, play, and chill with while still being able to do your own thing and make your own rules.

Your Money Gal (or Guy)

A good accountant is absolutely vital to having your own business. We recommend working with someone who specializes in small businesses and if they understand the beauty game, that’s an added bonus. Your accountant will be able to help you with taxation requirements as well as give you tips on cash flow and show you the best ways to save for retirement.

Your Insurance Pro

Insurance is often one of those big question marks for entrepreneurs. What do I need? How much should I be paying? What are my risks? A great insurance agent will be sure that you’re getting the right coverage for what suits your business and if you need anything above and beyond your typical limited liability insurance.

Your Town Economic Development Director

Networking is a key part of starting a business and your local town hall is a good place to start. Most towns and cities have an Economic Development Director whose job is to help local businesses in the area. We always recommend getting to know him or her as well as the Chamber of Commerce if there is a branch in your town. This is a fantastic opportunity to be introduced to other business owners in the area and to look for potential clients.

Your Mentor

When starting out gets overwhelming, having someone who has done it all before can be the lifeline you need. At Briary Salon Suites, our stylists love that they can come to us with questions about their businesses and that help is only a phone call away. When you feel alone, a good mentor is a game-changer.

Your Sales Rep

Products are a big part of a beauty business but they can also be a major expense. Having an excellent rep who will only sell you what you need and who can keep you in the loop on sales and promos is always a good idea. Just make sure it’s not only about the product, a great rep will be a huge asset when it comes to trends and product education too.
